Expertise France is recruiting a dynamic and proactive individual to join our team as an Open Innovation & Start-up Manager for the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator project. An expertise in Corporate Venturing, Innovation projects and Tech Startups assessment is required. 

  • The candidate  will assume the posture of a senior expert in the Corporate Venturing field, demonstrating the ability to proactively propose initiatives, drive process improvements, and deliver strategic and operational recommendations.

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

The selected candidate will be responsible for keeping the stakeholders engaged within their whole acceleration journey. The main part of the job will Account Management”.

More precisely, once corporates have expressed their need for a digital technology solution, the main goal of the Open Innovation & Start-up Manager is to provide them support throughout the whole acceleration process: from selecting the right partner (start-up scouting) to the definition and follow up of the Acceleration Services.

It means supporting the corporates who have expressed challenges with :

  • Finding good start up candidates (Solution provider - Start up Scouting) to answer this challenge
  • The management of proposal made by start-ups (consideration of the Solutions Proposed, assessment & selection)
  • The organization of match-making meetings between the corporates & the startups (solution provider with the corporates seeking solutions)
  • The final choice of the right start-up to select & conduct the POC with
  • The definition of the acceleration roadmap that the partnership will follow (In a consultant “Mentor role”, selection of the relevant modules from the acceleration catalogue services for this specific partnership)

 

It is important to precise that though the “Account Management” remains the core of this job position, Prospection tasks, that we can describe as “Business Development” will also be necessary in order to maintain the size of the Portfolio to management, and fill the project pipeline with Open Innovation Challenges.

  • This means to be willing and capable of managing a Lead Pipeline, from generation to transformation, leveraging traditional B2B Sales skills such as prospection, discovery, solution proposal, towards our typical target and Persona : the Chief Innovation Officers.

  • More precisely, it means being able to connect with Chief Innovation officers from our database, in order to raise Open Innovation “Challenges” that he would then “Solve” through the Startup scouting mentioned above.

Drawing on experience in Innovation sector support and Open Innovation projects, the Open innovation & Start-up Manager will play a critical role in supporting partnerships (meaning 1 corporate “Challenge holder” and one Start up “Solution provider”) across Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean to benefit from the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator Services.

 

He/she will be responsible for the partnerships to actually turn live. The person should demonstrate good client relationship management and be able to understand both technological challenges on one side, and technical value proposition on the other side, in order to identify relevant synergies.

  • A big part of the job consists in finding and selecting potential solution providers to existing challenges ("start up scouting"). It requires having a good understanding of what Digital Transformation means to Corporates, as well as knowing how Digital Start-up produce value. Uding Databases as CrunchBase, what is a good start up candidate for a Corporates and their Open Innovation Team. How to build the best, the most relevant Corporate Venturing couple (Venture Clienting mode), the one that will be most likely to succeed, in due time.

  • The second challenge consists in getting from the Matchmaking stage (good solution provider identified) to an actual signed partnership where both parties contractuallyagree to go further and start the collaboration around the concretely defined POC project.

  • Last point, he should help to design the acceleration roadmap that the partners will follow (Business case / Proof of Concepts / Investment services) according to a precise understanding of the partner’s ambitions and needs, like an expert consultant in Corporate Venturing would.

More specifically, the responsibilities include:

  • Open Innovation ecosystem clear understanding: leverage the value of each stakeholders type (Corporates, Start-ups, other innovation enablers) onboarded in the program or identified as good relevant candidate (i.e. “lead”). This portfolio of stakeholders will be at your disposal, it will be your responsibility to activate it to engage them throughout the whole accelerator process (1. Expressing a challenge 2.Finding a solver 3. Provide the right acceleration services) 
  • Account Management: Matching needs with Solutions: The program provides corporates expressing a challenge with a minimum of 3 good candidate (startups that seem to be compatible with them in terms of technology wanted). This will be the core of your job to be able to scout relevant start up from databases such as Crunchbase, generate results, sort them out, and eventually come up with a good quality shortlist to be presented to the corporate.  
  • Business Development: Expanding the portfolio: in addition to taking care of the existing stakeholders in the portfolio, it will also be your responsibility to generate additional Open Innovation Opportunities, i.e. “Challenges. Helping the rest of the team to onboard more Corporates in the project will also be regularly necessary, for raising more opportunities.

  • Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate records of communication and interactions with participants. Provide regular updates and reports on progress, challenges, and successes to the project leader.

Project or context description

The main objective the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator initiative is to contribute to innovation and digital transformation of the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region by accelerating multi-stakeholder and private sector collaboration, competitiveness, digital skills, innovation and joint-ventures between European and Latin American/Caribbean businesses in the digital area. 

 

In this context, the “EU-LAC Digital Accelerator” encompasses the following activities:  

·       Establishing high potential digital areas for collaboration opportunities jointly with EU member states and partners in the LAC region. 

·       Generating entrepreneurial projects benefitting from the collaboration between partners from EU and LAC in the selected areas.  

·       Facilitating the collaboration and developing strong business cases by providing acceleration services tailored to the needs of each project.  

·       Bringing digital projects to an investor-ready level and connecting them with relevant public and private investors to financially enable businesses. 

 

All these activities aim to generate a significant impact by accelerating digital transformation in Latin America and the Caribbean in two main ways:  

1.      Through comprehensive and mutually beneficial engagement on digital issues between EU and LAC region;

2.      By strengthening the EU’s role as a key partner and actor in the digital area in the LAC region

 

The action’s main outcome is the establishment of increased business and private sector joint-ventures between EU and LAC. The main indicator of this outcome is the number of joint-ventures established with the support of the action.  

 

The project is managed by a consortium of 9 partners. The lead partner responsible for implementing the action and coordinating with the European Commission is TECNALIA, a leading technological center with a multisectoral and multi-technological focus.

 

The EU LAC Digital Accelerator program is funded by the European Union and implemented by a consortium of 9 partners from Europe and Latin America/Caribbean:

·       TECNALIA (Lead partner): A top European applied research and technology center with a multisectoral focus, coordinating the project and its implementation. Supported by its affiliates in Colombia.

·       Octantis : The venture builder arm of TECNALIA (referred to as Octantis in the project), contributing expertise in technology transfer and venture creation.

·       IESE Business School (Spain) Open innovation & Corporate Venturing Institute : A top-ranked institution active in LAC, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation.

·       EBN: A European network of incubators and Accelerators. ): A non-profit organization serving a pan-European, global community of people using innovation as a driver for regional (economic) development.

·       EBAN: The European network for early-stage investors and business angels. Its mission is to promote successful and responsible business angel investment in Europe.

·       Expertise France: The French public agency responsible for the design and implementation of international technical cooperation projects.

·       WAYRA Hispam: Telefónica’s innovation hub in Latin America, supporting tech startups through investment and partnerships.

·        Caribbean Export: The regional trade and investment agency, focused on private sector growth and economic resilience.

This  5-year project, launched in 2023, is structured into 5 Work Packages (WPs):

·       WP1 – Leader: TECNALIA – Setting up and project management

Output: the establishment of the management structure of EU-LAC Digital Accelerator Action as an EU-LAC network of public-private sector entities active in digital transformation.

·       WP2 – Leader: Expertise France – Stakeholder gaps, needs and priorities

Output: the identification of gaps, needs and opportunities for EU-LAC stakeholders in digital cooperation and digital innovation.

·       WP3 – Leader: IESE – Identification of EU-LAC joint-venture opportunities 

Output: the identification of innovative investment opportunities in the digital area resulting from the facilitation of action-oriented EU-LAC multistakeholder dialogue on key issues regarding digital and data economy

·       WP4 – Leader: TECNALIA Ventures – Facilitation of EU-LAC joint-ventures

Output: the set of EU-LAC joint ventures (including partnerships, business ventures and collaborations) for digital economy engaged and facilitated with the support of the EU-LAC Digital Accelerator

·       WP 5 – Leader: TECNALIA Ventures – Community building and sustainability 

Output: an infrastructure, involving multiple stakeholders and beneficiaries, capable of sustaining the activities of EU-LAC Digital accelerator and expanding its impact.

Required profile

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL

  • Master’s degree (Bac+5) in Business Administration, International Relations, Political Sciences, Engineering, or Innovation Management.
  • Specialization in Open Innovation and/or Start-up Management : 
    •  Good understanding of the digital start-up ecosystem (SaaS, product management, Agile methodology,  Scrum certification, IT roadmaps)
    •  Clear understanding of Corporate / Startups collaborations frameworks (i.e. Corporate Venturing Methodologies and Venture Clienting

  • Autonomy in account management and customer support.
    • Experience managing B2B sales pipelines: from lead qualification to opportunity conversion and account growth.
    • Familiarity with CRM tools such as Salesforce, Monday, or HubSpot is a plus.

 

  • Familiarity and agility with IT tools related to Start-up Scouting : Crunchbase (or Pitchbook, or CB Insights or others) & Databases in General

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and build partnerships

  • Proactive and results-oriented, with strong initiative and a proven ability to make actionable recommendations.

  • Full professional proficiency in English is required; proficiency in French and Spanish is an asset.

 

 

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum  5 years experience, including 3 years as a Startup Manager or other Innovation role  within an incubator, accelerator, corporate innovation department, VC/PE fund, or innovation consulting agency, Start-up Studio or any other Corporate Venturing related company

  •  Proven experience working in an international context for at least 2 years.

  • Familiarity with Latin American and Caribbean markets is a plus.

  • Prior Experience in Innovation projects Management, Business Development, Account Management.

  • Established knowledge of the start-up and tech ecosystem, particularly in France, Europe, and Latin America, with the ability to leverage this network.

Additional information

  • The Open Innovation & Start up Manager will coordinate his efforts jointly with the rest of the team in Expertise France, i.e. 4 people :  the Project Leader, the Project manager and the other Open innovation Manager (in charge of identifying Corporates Challenges), in liaise with the teams of the 9 consortium partners which are about 30 other colleagues.

  • The mission is based in Paris, at the headquarters of Expertise France, for a duration of 12 months, renewable.

  • Travels in Latin America & in Europe expected about twice a year.
  • Start date: 1st October 2025 (ideally around that date)
