Mission description:

The successful candidate will support IPJ Director, who is responsible for the scientific coordination and overall structuring of the IPJ. The successful candidate will support the Director in developing partnerships with sponsors, with the aim of raising funds and expanding the IPJ's network of sponsors at local, regional and international level.

The successful candidate will work to consolidate Institut Pasteur du Japon's economic model, in liaison with the Institut Pasteur, and more specifically the International Affairs Department (DAI), and Japanese partners including the Universities of Tokyo and Kyoto, as well as with the Embassy of France to Japan.

In addition, the future Deputy Director will be responsible for overseeing the administrative, financial and legal operationalization of IPJ.

Main tasks:

  • Actively contribute to the establishment of Institut Pasteur du Japon (IPJ) in Japan and to its designing (particularly its business model).
  • Define and implement a fund-raising strategy in conjunction with IPJ Director.
  • Identify, mobilize and secure the loyalty of diversified funding sources: patronage, donations, institutional partnerships, foundations.
  • Manage donor relations: develop and maintain long-term relationships with potential individual, foundation and corporate donors.
  • Design and manage communication initiatives and targeted fund-raising campaigns to raise the Institute's profile with financial partners (events, calls for donations, partnerships, etc.).
  • Support IPJ's Director in coordinating the activities of IPJ's administrative and financial departments, and in effectively setting up the new legal structure.

 

Expected results:

  • Implementation of a fund-raising action plan with tangible results within 6 to 12 months of taking office.
  •  Initial financial partnerships to support IPJ's activities.
  • Gradual development of a network of mobilized patrons and partners.
  • Significant increase in external resources to support IPJ's growth.
  • Structured monitoring of medium-term financing opportunities.

Project description:

The successful candidate will work directly with Institut Pasteur du Japon (IPJ) team, supporting IPJ Director.

Institut Pasteur du Japon was launched in June 2024, as part of a partnership between the Institut Pasteur, the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, with the aim of strengthening Institut Pasteur's scientific collaborations with its main Japanese partners. The institute will have four main missions:

  1. To carry out cutting-edge biomedical research on ageing and, in particular, its interactions with infectious diseases;
  2. To become a recognized and influential player in the field of public health research in Japan;
  3. To offer high-level training and teaching opportunities;
  4. To co-construct large-scale projects with industrial partners in the field of innovation and beyond.

Description of the host structure: The position is based at the Institut Pasteur du Japon, currently located in Ginza, Tokyo.

Required profile

Professional experience:

  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) in developing strategic partnerships, fundraising or philanthropy, ideally in the research, healthcare or higher education sectors.
  • Solid experience in designing and implementing medium- to long-term funding strategies.
  • International or cross-cultural experience highly appreciated, particularly in Franco-Japanese or Asian environments.
  • Good knowledge of international healthcare cooperation. Knowledge of the missions and actions of the Institut Pasteur and the Pasteur Network would be an asset.
  • The candidate must be professionally established in the Japanese society, and have a network of potential sponsorship partnerships.
  • Experience in managing or coordinating complex projects will be particularly appreciated. 

 

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

Higher education (Bac+5 minimum), ideally in management, international affairs, political science, communication or scientific disciplines.

Know-how : 

  • Excellent command of fund-raising and management of sponsorship partnership.
  • Excellent negotiation, writing and public speaking skills
  • Good knowledge of private and public funding mechanisms (philanthropy, foundations, calls for projects, institutional donations, etc.)
  • Proven experience of the Japanese ecosystem and its operating methods. 
  • Ability to interact with high-level contacts (scientists, companies, sponsors, institutions).
  • Ability to train, coach, develop and lead a team
  • Good command of financial management and reporting techniques
  • Native Japanese speaker required. Very good command of English is required. Good command of French is an asset.

Duration of the assignment: 24 months, renewable once under certain conditions

Type of contract: CDDU, private law employment contract (public officials will be seconded to Expertise France for the duration of the assignment)
Remuneration according to Expertise France’s compensation policy: base salary + (if applicable) family allowance + technical and expatriation bonus + coverage of housing expenses* and, if applicable, security costs* + coverage of school fees* for accompanying children under 21 in the country of residence + round-trip airfare between contractual address and place of residence, including 1 initial departure, 1 round-trip during the assignment, and 1 final return + coverage of moving* and visa* expenses + social protection (CFE, complementary health insurance, disability coverage)
