Mission description

Mission description:

- Development and implementation of the IPK's scientific strategy in collaboration with the governance bodies, in particular the Board of Directors, the Scientific Advisory Board and the CEO.

- Management of the scientific strategy of IPK (110 people). In agreement with the CEO, and according to the skills of the CSO candidate, supervises different biology research teams (Zoonotic Virus, Viral Immunology, Antibacterial Resistance, Advanced BioMedical Research) and 5 translational research platforms (Screening Platform, AI Drug Discovery, Animal Research & Operation, Applied Molecular Biochemistry and Chemical Structure Biology of Pathogen).

- Creation of New Teams: A group of researchers is currently being recruited to lead a future mid-sized team focused on mRNA vaccines and emerging infectious diseases, with anticipated support from the upcoming CSO. Additionally, leveraging the Pasteur international unit, the CSO may assist in creating an artificial intelligence (AI) team to advance IPK's capabilities in image-based high-content screening and virtual drug screening.

- Promote the principles of scientific integrity and humanist and universal values, at the heart of Pasteurian identity, among IPK researchers.

- Support the development of a regional hub for international training and structure the IPK's participation in international training programs, within and outside the Pasteur network (e.g. Paris Cité program or Pasteur International Courses).

- Ensure that the IPK is the focal point for Franco-Korean cooperation in health and research, in coordination with the embassy, ​​the IP Paris, but also French partners (INSERM, CNRS, IRD, Ministry of Higher Education and Research, French Tech, Club Santé, etc.) and Korean partners (Ministry of Science in general and the future Korean Institute of Basic Virology (KBVI) in particular). Beyond that, the creation of the Institut Pasteur Japan and the presence of an office of the Pasteur Network for the Asia region within the IPK will allow the development of new possibilities for collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region.

- In coordination with the second ETI, be the embassy's relay for cooperation in the health sector (contribution to events organized by the scientific and academic sector, monitoring and notes). Participation of the IPK in the co-piloting of the Korean Health Club. Reception and advice to French researchers passing through. Promotion of the destination France among Korean researchers.

Main tasks and expected results:      

- Participate in the scientific and administrative life of the IPK, by writing reports and participating in various internal committees (ethics committee, biosafety committee, recruitment committee, patent committee, etc.).

- Develop intramural collaborations and funding.

- Promote or coordinate applications for international projects, whether or not developed by the Pasteur Network, with different IPK teams on concrete projects, in line with a “One Health” or “Climate and Health” approach for example, to ultimately increase the recognition and visibility of the IPK.

- Help set up international education programs (e.g. Pasteur International Courses, actions with Paris Cité, etc.).

Mandated by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Expertise France is recruiting the future Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of the Pasteur Institute of Korea, as an International Technical Expert (ETI).

Project Description: Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) of the Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) and Advisor to IPK Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The objective of supporting the IPK is twofold:

1/ make the IPK a world reference center for post-Covid research into drugs and vaccines to combat infectious diseases

2/ support the development of a regional hub for health research

The Institut Pasteur Korea (IPK) is a non-profit foundation incorporated under Korean law. It is part of the international network of Institut Pasteur, which studies infectious diseases with the aim of impacting global public health, particularly in the field of emerging diseases. Today, the IPK has established a reputation in the field of drug discovery targeting infectious diseases, and its research on drug candidates could pave the way for new, affordable therapeutic possibilities. The CEO is also prioritizing the development of projects on mRNA vaccines and diagnostics. IPK consists of 110 individuals and 9 R&D teams specializing in bacteriology, virology, parasitology, drug discovery, and vaccine development. Qualifications

PhD required, proven scientific skills in IPK's areas of strength, including microbiology, virology, immunology, vaccines, medicinal chemistry or high-throughput, high-molecule content imaging and screening.

A doctor of medicine or pharmacy degree/university professor may be an asset.

Fluent English is essential (experienced user, e.g. B2-C2 CEFR level). Knowledge of Korean would be a plus.

Professional experience

Strong research and clinical experience (or good knowledge of public health) with strong international visibility (publications in international journals), particularly in the field of infectious diseases, and proven experience in team and network management. Given the IPK's extensive relationships with industry, knowledge of this sector would be a plus.
