Mission description

The European Union funded "EU4Justice, phase 2" project is recruiting an Interpreter/Translator

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the Project Interpreter/Translator will perform the following main tasks:

  • Written translation from English into Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and from Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian into English of all relevant documentation such as laws, regulations, procedures, documentation of the BiH justice sector stakeholders, legal reports, as well as project documents such as project reports, training materials, guidebooks, presentations etc.
  • Consecutive and simultaneous interpretation from English into Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and from Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian into English of events such as: Project Steering committee meetings, official and unofficial meetings with beneficiaries and other stakeholders, activities such as trainings, round tables, discussions, conferences, workshops, etc.
  • Organising outsourcing of translation/interpretation in case of need

In addition to these main tasks, the Project Translator/Interpreter can be asked to draft meeting minutes and perform other tasks related to the project, upon request of the Project Manager.

Project or context description

As applicant for EU membership, Bosnia and Herzegovina (‘BiH’) is expected to meet EU justice standards as provided for by several of the 14 key priorities for membership and recalled by the EU Commission in its 2018 Western Balkan Strategy.

The cross-cutting objective of this action is to share practical methods with the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (the ‘HJPC’) and other Justice Institutions of BiH in order to increase its capacities to implement its mission to ensure independence and professionalism of the judiciary, promote judicial reform, and enhance the country’s response to organised crime and corruption.

This Action aims at supporting the Justice Sector Institutions in carrying out these changes in order to align the functioning of the BiH judiciary with EU rule of law standards by enhancing professionalism, efficiency and transparency of the BiH justice system for the final benefit of BiH citizens. 

Required profile

Qualifications and experience:

  • University degree in applied language or language and civilisation in English or any other related degree, (candidates with broad professional experience in the translation field may be considered) ;
  • C2 level in English and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian mandatory;
  • C1+ level in French, Spanish and/or German an asset;
  • At least 3-year experience of translation for international projects or equivalent;
  • Experience in justice related assignments would be an asset;

Professional skills:

  • Excellent oral and writing skills;
  • Excellent knowledge of justice vocabulary, knowledge of the BiH justice institutional framework would be an asset;
  • Good knowledge of computer and communications tools (word, excel, powerpoint, etc.);
  • Excellent coordination and teamwork skills – in particular in a multicultural context;
